It Takes a Village (or a County)

Gilpin County has a rare treasure, more valuable than gold or silver. That treasure is its volunteers. We’re pleased to have great folks volunteering for our group and the events in which we participate. But, we’re not the only ones who depend on volunteers. High Country Auxiliary, the Food Bank, and other groups also rely on folks who give up their time and talents to help out.

On June 11th, we awarded a number of people who have done amazing things for the county and our group. We presented our “Heart of the Community” Volunteer Awards to Megan Goldkamp, Tony Thorpe and Derek Blake. Each received a custom wooden plaque made and donated by FGCCC board secretary, Jess Tuton. Here’s a picture of our awards.

Harry Nimrod, who received the “Heart of the Community Award” last year, was again recognized at this year’s event. Harry continues to donate hundreds of hours in his popular fly rod building class and organizes parking management for the Gilpin County Fair. A certificate of appreciation was also given to Eric Douglas who has served as a volunteer member of the FGCCC Board of Directors for two years. Steve Briggs was also awarded; he has been instructor, manager and developer of the Gilpin Clay Studio since it opened in 2003. Linza Douglas has led the Senior Fit exercise program three days a week at the community center for several years. Shaun Wicen, Recreation Coordinator at the community center, will be recognized for his exemplary work on the FGCCC Broncos-funded flag football program. We also awarded special poster prizes to our team of Karen Eye, Mary Lorenz, Patty Hunter, and Carol Mirarck, who hung posters about events around the county, and conferred a special cap to Marian Shetley for her work on the Turkey Trot last year and various events this year.

It’s important to recognize our volunteers, not only because they give so much of themselves to our group and to Parks & Recreation. They also are helping others in the county through their actions. Next time you’re at an event (the fair, for example), check out the volunteers. They’re there, doing the things that need to be done. And, if you’re interested in joining us as a volunteer, check out our volunteer form here on our Website. Or come talk to us at our Fair table in July!
